Ye is praising President Donald Trump and Drake for their efforts in helping former kingpin Larry Hoover get closer to freedom.
On Tuesday, May 28, the President of the United States commuted Larry Hoover's federal life sentences during his clemency spree. Hoover, now 74, was convicted in 1997 on federal charges after he was accused of ordering murders, beatings, and drug deals from his prison cell. He was serving six life sentences at a supermax prison in Colorado. Following the news about Trump's commutation, Ye, who has supported Larry Hoover's freedom for years, took to X and thanked the POTUS.
"WORDS CAN’T EXPRESS MY GRATITUDE FOR OUR DEVOTED ENDURING PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP FOR FREEING LARRY HOOVER," Ye wrote. "Thank you Drake for helping to bring Larry Hoover home."
Ye has been advocating for Hoover's freedom since 2021. With help from J Prince, the rapper-producer hosted his Free Larry Hoover Benefit Concert in Los Angeles to raise awareness about Hoover's incarceration and promote prison reform. During the show, Ye performed and reunited with Drake following their bitter beef. Drizzy also performed his "Forever" collaboration with Ye, along with other hits. Larry Hoover, Jr., Hoover's son, was also in attendance for the show. He also thanked Ye for his efforts after Trump commuted his father's sentence.
"He had a very big part because he started it all off," he told TMZ. "He put us on the platform. He took us to the White House on his platform when he didn’t have to do that... He stuck his neck out there. We know he don’t have a problem with sticking his neck out there about what he believes in, and I’m glad he believed in this."
Despite Trump's commutation, Larry Hoover isn't free yet. He's still being held behind bars for a 200-year sentence he received after he was convicted of a 1973 murder in Chicago. He's scheduled to be transferred to a state prison in Illinois to serve out the rest of his sentence. Hoover's son argues the former gang leader has changed significantly over the years. He appeared on The Breakfast Club and discussed the status of his father's case, his thoughts on Trump's commutation, and the ongoing fight to free his father.
