See First Photo of Kristen Stewart As Princess Diana In 'Spencer' Biopic

Kristen Stewart made headlines in 2020 when it was announced she would be portraying the late Princess Diana on the big screen. Some royal watchers had their doubts about the casting, however, a new photo of Stewart in costume for the upcoming biopic, titled Spencer, will have even the biggest skeptics doing a double-take.

On Wednesday (January 27), Neon Studios released a photo of Stewart on set of Spencer to mark the beginning of filming. "Kristen Stewart is Diana, Princess of Wales, in Pablo Larraín’s SPENCER," the Tweet reads. Stewart can be seen in a blonde wig, red blazer and black hat. The resemblance between the actress and the People's Princess is truly uncanny.

According to Variety, Spencer isn't your typical biopic, Instead of following Princess Diana throughout her life, the film will instead focus on just one weekend in Princess Diana's short life, as she spends the Christmas holiday with the Royal Family at the Sandringham estate in Norfolk, and decides to end her marriage to Prince Charles.

“‘Spencer is a dive inside an emotional imagining of who Diana was at a pivotal turning point in her life,” Stewart said in a statement about the film. “It is a physical assertion of the sum of her parts, which starts with her given name: Spencer. It is a harrowing effort for her to return to herself, as Diana strives to hold onto what the name Spencer means to her.”

The script was written by “Peaky Blinders” creator Steven Knight, who said in an interview with Variety that working on Spencer "has been a pleasure. I think it’s a different perspective on a story that we don’t all know well, but we all feel we now are a part of it...And I just found the whole thing fascinating. To talk to people who knew her and to try and get a view of this person — who this person really was — who was an ordinary person in extraordinary situations is the way I think of her.”

Spencer is expected to make its debut in fall 2021—just shy of the 25th anniversary of Princess Diana’s tragic death.
