Here's Why 'Big Little Lies' Season 3 Is 'Not Realistic'

Premiere Of HBO's "Big Little Lies" - Arrivals

Who isn't obsessed with HBO's Big Little Lies right now? The hit drama's second season brought back the star-studded original cast and added a screaming Meryl Streep to the mix. As Big Little Lie's sophomore effort comes to a close, though, fans are left wondering if there will be a third season. The answer is sure to disappoint them. According to an HBO insider, another season is "not realistic." Here's why.

The core cast of Big Little Lie's consists of five A-List actresses: Laura Dern, Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley, Zoe Kravitz and Reese Witherspoon. These ladies are super busy and it turns out lining up their schedules for production is actually quite difficult. "The reality is, they are some of the busiest actresses working in Hollywood. I just think it's not realistic," HBO's Casey Bloys told TV Line.

"Look, if they all came to me and said, 'We worked out all of our schedules!,' then sure. But I just don't think it's realistic," he continued. "Season 2 was a chance for everyone involved to end [the franchise] in a way that feels satisfying.”

David E. Kelley, the creator and writer of Big Little Lies, confirmed at the Television Critics Association tour earlier this year that there are currently no plans for season three. "We like our closure at season 2, that will probably be it," he explained. Kidman echoed those sentiments, as well, saying, "There’s no plan for it. This was a long shoot for us, an enormous amount of work, we’re amazed we can be here."

Big Little Lies has become a passion project for many of the actresses, though, which is why they agreed to come back for the second season. “We all said goodbye, but we became very close, had such a good time doing it and the desire to spend more time together was a huge part of it, but there was an enormous demand from the audience,” Kidman said. “I’ve never been in something that reached so far globally, that was such a compelling idea in terms of putting it together again … but it was generated by the audience.”

Fingers crossed the cast and crew change their mind and come back to Monterey for a third season!
